Parent Council
AGM takes place on Wednesday, 19th October at 8.15pm 2011 in the Pastoral Centre.
We are YOUR Council, made up of ordinary parents, like you. Please feel free to join us.
St. Fiachra’s Junior National School Parents Council is made up of parents of children from across the classes. Our aim is to provide support to the Board of Management, and to the School Principal and Staff, and also to relay information to parents relating to our childrens’ education.
We meet monthly during the school year, usually on the third Wednesday of each month, with social outings at Christmas and before the Summer break.
The objectives of the Parents Council are:
- To promote and foster good relations and co-operation between school and home.
- To act on behalf of parents in an advisory capacity in relation to the school.
- To promote the educational and welfare interests of the children.
- To assist in extra-curricular activities, eg. safety in the car park, healthy eating and walk to school campaigns.
- To offer parents information, programmes, etc. which they may find helpful in fulfilling their role as primary educators of their children.
- To help provide extra equipment and teaching aids for the school.
- To make representations on behalf of the general body of parents regarding national issues that affect primary education.
Some of the activities which the Parents Council undertake are to:
- Organize the Personal Accident Insurance Scheme for all children in the school.
- Organize the annual school colouring competition.
- Organize the school book fair. A percentage of the proceeds are given back to the school in the form of books. €3,000 was raised in 2010.
- Send newsletters home with school children to keep parents up to date with events and issues which affect both parents and children.
- Help with Walk to School Campaign, and campaigns to help traffic flow around the school (in conjunction with the Senior Parents Council).
- Organize refreshments after the First Holy Communions.
- Liaise with National Parents Council on national issues which affect our childrens’ education, and also in relation to requirements of our children with special needs.
- Liaise with uniform supplier on price/quality issues.
- Undertake parent surveys.

It’s a great way to meet other parents, to exchange information and to have an influence on what happens in our school. Everybody is welcome.
We welcome your suggestions on how we can further our goals. We are YOUR Council, made up of ordinary parents, like you. Please feel free to contact us if you feel that we may be able to help you.
